Описание

Kyrgyzstan has more than 4,000 plant species. Rare forests at an altitude of 2000–2500 m have
various types of grasses and plants, including Tien Shan spruces and edelweiss.
The fauna is represented by more than 500 species of vertebrates (of which 335 species of birds
and 49 species of fish) and 3000 species of insects, many of which are rare and are listed in the
Red Book. Herds of argali, red deer and predatory brown bears are found in the cypress forests
of Tien Shan. Foxes, wolves, ground squirrels, and small mammals such as jerboas and pikas live
in mountain valleys, and mountain streams are rich in trout.

Snow leopards, inhabiting mainly in the highlands, in the past inhabited most of the country,
but to date, the population of the species is limited. Aigul, or lunar flower, is a herbaceous
plant, endemic to the south of Kyrgyzstan, a species of Ryabchik (Fritillaria eduardii Regel
(Edward Ryabchik)).
For the first time, endangered species of animals and plants of Kyrgyzstan were listed in the
Red Book of the USSR in 1978. In the following years, the list expanded, and the information
about endangered species became larger, and in 1985 the Red Book of the Kyrgyz SSR was
published. Then, in 2006, it was republished in the Red Book of the Kyrgyz Republic.
In the Kyrgyz Republic, there are 83 specially protected natural areas of different status. The
area they occupy is about 761.3 thousand million hectares (about 4.45% of the entire country).
Protected areas include eight state reserves, nine national parks and 67 natural parks (10
forest, 23 botanical, 18 exploration, 2 complex and 14 livestock). Two biosphere reserves are
protected by UNESCO, of which the oldest and largest are the Issyk-Kul biosphere reserve.
