Issyk-Kul (from the Kyrgyz language Issyk-Kul — “hot lake”) is the largest lake in Kyrgyzstan,
without drainage, is among the 25 largest lakes in the world and is in sixth place in the list of
the deepest lakes. It is located in the northeastern part of the republic, between the ranges of
the Northern Tien Shan: Kungei-Ala-Too and Terskey Ala-Too at an altitude of 1609 m above
sea level. The lake is drainless, up to 80 relatively small tributaries flow into it. Of these, the
largest are the Tupe and Jergalan, which flow in from the east. In the western part, the Chu
River very close to the lake, which along the Kutemaldy channel with a length of 6 km
sometimes gives it a part of its waters during the spring floods. The water level in Issyk-Kul
cyclically changes (it rises, then falls); The cycle takes place over several decades. The water is
brackish (water salinity — 5.90%).
The water volume is equal to 1738 km³, the water surface area is 6236 km², the coastline is 688
km long, the average depth is 278 m, and the greatest depth is almost 2.5 times as large and
equals 702 m. 182 km, and from south to north — 58 km.
The lake has 4 gulfs: Rybachy, Dzhirgalansky (Przhevalsky), Tyupsky and Pokrovsky.
